Recruitment Information

Novice rowing in university is a great way for beginners to learn the sport of rowing. It is typically geared towards athletic students who have little to no experience in rowing and provides them with the opportunity to learn the basics of the sport in a supportive and encouraging environment. Novice rowing teams often compete against other novice teams, allowing students to gain experience and confidence before moving on to more levels of competition.

SFU NOVICE PROGRAM

PREPARATION

Base Fitness + Tech

Once selected, novice rowers learn the basics of the rowing on the erg (rowing machines). They'll also receive a training plan from our coaching team designed to quickly improve rowing competency and build on existing strength and aerobic fitness.

Times: 6:45 AM - 7:00 AM

Days: Wednesdays

ON-WATER TRAINING

Learn to Row

Novice "learn to row" sessions will run concurrently with senior team morning practices. In these sessions, new recruits will learn the basics of rowing on the water; including oar handling, stroke progression, boat handling, and key terminology.

Time: 5:30 AM - 7:45 AM

Days: Mondays & Fridays

COMPETITION

Novice Racing

As a late entry sport, regattas often have designated "collegiate novice" events - giving even the newest rowers an opportunity for meaningful competition. At these regattas, our novices get to race against other university novice programs and proudly Rep the Leaf for SFU!
